Chapter Seven

“I just want to repeat that I think this is a terrible idea,” Daniel said, shifting in his seat and sipping his drink. His eyes darted around the coffee shop. “I mean, the coffee is good, but the atmosphere is so... tense.”

“That’s just you,” Adrien said, sipping his tea. He hadn’t gotten the chance to try the one he ordered yesterday. He had left via the alleyway and met up with Daniel across the street. Daniel had been both excited and disapproving of what had happened between Adrien and Jasper. “You need to learn to relax.”

“I don’t think you understand the gravity of this situation.”

“I believe you overestimate it.”

“This is a tiger owned shop.”

“It’s in neutral territory. We aren’t breaking any laws.”

“Have you seen the way the employees here stare at us?”

“Ignore them.”

Daniel huffed, crossing one arm over his chest and slumping in his chair. “It’s difficult to ignore death glares.”

Adrien shrugged, sipping his drink. He kept one eye on the door to the backroom. The same woman from before worked at the register, Laila, and another woman made drinks. Jasper had shown himself once since they arrived. He came out from the back room with a towel thrown over one shoulder and earbuds in his ears. Jasper bobbed his head to the music as he moved around the coffee shop, cleaning off tables and straightening chairs.

Then he had seen Adrien, and he froze. Adrien had smiled, and Jasper had frowned. Then he had retreated to the backroom and hadn’t been seen from since.

“He’s not coming back out,” Daniel whined.

“He will.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I don’t plan on leaving until he does.”

Daniel looked at him; one eyebrow raised. “You do realize this is stalking, right?”

Adrien shrugged, and Daniel sighed, checking his phone. “Well, we’ve been here for nearly an hour.”

“I didn’t ask you to come, you know.”

“I know, but what kinda friend would I be if I let you go alone into enemy territory?”

Adrien rolled his eyes. “This barely counts as enemy territory.”

“It does a little...” Daniel glanced around, lowering his voice. “It stinks of cat in here. Seriously, does Jasper smell like this? How can you stand it?”

Adrien snorted. “It’s not that bad.”

“You’ve got weird tastes.”

“You’ve got predictable tastes.”

Daniel put a hand on his chest in mock offense. “Excuse you, I don’t know what you mean.”

“Oh, please,” Adrien smirked. “Jack is built like the captain of a football team but follows you around like a puppy. Predictable.”

Jack snorted. “At least, I know what I like in men.” He waved a hand at Adrien and extended the gesture to indicate the whole coffee shop. “I’m convinced you have no idea what you like.”

Adrien shrugged. “Maybe, but I’m willing to find out.”

Daniel checked his phone again. “Be that as it may, my break is almost over.”

Adrien waved a hand at him, shooing him away from the table. “Go, I’ll be fine.”

Daniel stood hesitantly. “Are you sure? You could just come back with me, and we can try again another day?”

“I’m sure.
